Adult Sailing Program

The Adult Sailing Program is given each June. It consists of three sessions combining theory and on water practice and one orientation to the club on a separate day. This year the sessions will take place on: June 6 (orientation), June 13, 20 and 27. The program is open to club members and non-members. This program is for adults who have never sailed or have very limited knowledge of and exposure to the sport of sailing. Those who are simply returning to the sport are encouraged to join the club, take advantage of our loaner program (free in the first year) and mentorship of experienced River Rats skippers.

The class is aligned with ASA 101 Sailing Standards and includes:
Terminology: Understanding sailboat parts, sail functions, and essential sailing terms.
Maneuvers: Knowledge of points of sail, helm commands, and navigation rules, and including maneuvers like tacking and jibing.
Safety: Familiarity with required safety equipment, lights, signals and responsible seamanship.
Sailing Skills: Competence in rigging sails, executing maneuvers, and responding to crew commands.
Knot Tying: Proficiency in various knots, including Figure-8 and Bowline and Cleat Hitch.

The goal of the Adult Sailing Program is to enable adults to skipper a small boat on the river in a safe and responsible manner, at first with an experienced skipper, and eventually on their own in appropriate wind conditions.
